Evaluation of the effects of S-7990 on the skin surface hydration state in vivo.

S-7990 is a skin protecting preparation containing a methacrylic acid ethyl acrylate copolymer, ethyl cellulose and isopropanol and which forms a film when applied.<BR>The influences on the skin surface hydration state after topical application of the preparation were evaluated by measuring electrical conductance with a skin surface hygrometer and transepidermal water loss with an evaporimeter. Ten healthy female volunteers, ranging in age from 19 to 27 years, were chosen as subjects.<BR>The electrical measurements were performed on the flexor surface of the forearm just before topical application of test preparations and immediately, 15, 30, 90 minutes after the application.<BR>S-7990 reduced slightly the water content of the stratum corneum but did not reduce the transepidermal water loss after a single application of S-7990 as compared with non application as the control.<BR>These results suggest that S-7990 has little effect on the water exchange through the skin.
