Two cases of drug eruptions from α-mercatopropionylglycine (Thiola, Santen) are reported.
Case 1: A 65-year-old woman showed a clinical appearance of Stevens-Johnson's syndrome. Patch test revealed positive reactions with 1% and 5% of thiola in petrolatum, but negative with D-penicillamine. In addition, it was confirmed that similar lesions appeared with light fever 3 hours after an oral administration of 100mg of thiola.
Case 2: A 66-year-old woman had chronic eczematous lesions on the both upper and lower extremities, especially dorsa of hands and feet. Patch test was negative with thiola, while five consecutive oral administrations of 100mg of the drug induced erythematoedematous halo at and around the old lesions, similar to those of fixed drug eruptions.
