Copper blast furnace slags contain from 20 to 40 per cent of iron and 1 to 5 per cent of zinc.<BR>The objects of this investigation are to prepare pig iron of commercial use from the iron contained in the slag, and to recover zinc in it at the same time as a byproduct.<BR>The results of the fundamental researches for these purposes are as follows:<BR>1) The maximum recoery of iron is given by heating the slag above 1, 450°C mixing with a proper amount of anthracite or coke and about 10 per cent of lime.<BR>2) The best result of recovery of, zinc is obtained by heating the slag above 1, 400°C mixing' with 5 to 10 per cent qf lime.<BR>3) The iron reduced from the slag by heating it at 1, 500°C during 15 minutes in a kryptol furnace contain 2-3% C, 0.05, -1.5% Si, about 1% Cu, and 1-3% S.<BR>At this temperature'the: desuiphurization is very difficult by increasing the amount of lime added.<BR>4) The iron given above was desulphurized by heating in an arc furnace above 1, 600°C covering the melt with a mixture of lime and fluorspar.<BR>Required amounts of iron scrap, ferro-silicon, ferro-manganese and ferro-phosphorus were added to the desulphurized iron to prepare pig iron suitable for casting.<BR>The cast iron thus obtained contain C 3.033%, Mn 0.679%, Si 1.746%, P 0.115%, S 0.031% and Cu 0.607%.<BR>The tensile strength of this cast iron is 23.9 kg. per sq. m.m. and it has superior quality for resisting -corrosion.<BR>5) The iron given by heating the slag in an arc furnace contains 5 to 10 per cent of silicon, which is reduced from the slag locally heated to high temperature by the electric arc.
