Synthesis and Characterization of Polyimides with Mesogenic Groups in the Side Chains

Poly (hydroxyl-imide) s were prepared from amidol and 4, 4′- (hexafluoroisopropylidene) diphthalic anhydride by a traditional one-step process. The side chains having azo or biphenyl groups were then grafted by Mitsunobu reaction. All the resulting polyimides were readily soluble in organic solvents such as tetrahydrofuran (THF) and <I>N</I>, <I>N</I>-dimethylformamide (DMF). They also show good film-forming ability. The polyimides exhibit good thermal stability and mechanical properties. The polymers were produced with high yields and GPC analysis using polystyrene standards showed weight-average molecular weights of 5.0×10<SUP>4</SUP>-7.2×10<SUP>4</SUP>. All the polymers were characterized by polarizing microscope and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) measurements that revealed highly amorphous nature.
