Solvent Effect on Compatibility of Poly(ether sulfone)/Aramid Binary Blend.

The effect of solvents on the properties of poly (ether sulfone) (PES) /Po1y [N, N'- (oxydi-p-phenylene) isophthalamide] (aramid) polymerization blended films and solution blended films were investigated. The polymerization blended films were prepared by the polycondensation of N, N'-bis (trimethylsi1yl) -substituted bis (4-aminophenyl) ether with isophtaloyl chloride in the PES solution in NMP or in DMAc; the resulting blend so1utions were directly cast into films. The compatibility of both polymerization and solution blended films cast from NMP was lower than that of the films cast from DMAc, probably because of slower rate of evaporation of NMP. The tensile modulus and the tensile strength of both blended films were not affected by the cast solvents and exhibited slightly positive deviations from the linear rule of mixture. The cast solvents had no effect on the elongation at break for the polymerization b1ended films, whereas they were highly dependent on that of the solution blended films. All of the blended films had high elongation at break (50-90%) at 40-70wt% aramid compositions. The storage modulus of each of the two annealed blend films cast from DMAc was higher than that of the films cast from NMP because of the higher crystallinity of the aramid in annealed blend films.
