Syntheses and liquid-crystallinities of thermotropic copoly (ester amide) s were investigated. The three-components melt polycondensation of 4, 4′-dicarboxy-α, ω-diphenoxyalkane as an A component, 4, 4′-diacetoxybiphenyl as a B, and <I>p</I>-<I>N</I>-acetoxyaminobenzoic acid as a C gave the thermotropic copoly (ester amide) s containing a flexible spacer in the polymer backbone. Diacetylated hydroquinone was used as another B component. A polymer (10BPAB-1) having 10 mol% of C component and decamethylene spacer showed a typical nematic texture between 246°C (<I>T</I><SUB>m</SUB>) and 472°C (<I>T</I><SUB>i</SUB>) The melting points of the members of this series of polymers decreased with increasing amide group. The introduction of 60 mol% of the C component afforded the lowest melting temperature (208°C). The polymer structure and mesomorphic nature were examined by means of solid state and solution <SUP>13</SUP>C NMR spectroscopy, cross polarizing microscopy with a hot stage, and X-ray diffractometry.
