The orientation behavior of poly (vinyl alcohol) amorphous segments in the wet-drawing process was investigated by optical and X-ray diffraction methods. The degree of orientation of poly (vinyl alcohol) which was drawn in water increased during drying at constant length. The degree of orientation of poly (vinyl alcohol) amorphous segments which were obtained by wet-drawing is less than that of those obtained by drydrawing. However, Congo Red molecules which adsorbed at the amorphous region of poly (vinyl alcohol) became highly oriented by wet-drawing. In the wet-drawing process, it was found that the degree of swelling of poly (vinyl alcohol) film increased with draw ratio until the draw ratio of 4, then decreased with draw ratio. The stress-strain curves of poly (vinyl alcohol) film showed constant stress regions. These were attributed to the breakdown of some crystalline regions and the decrease of crystallinity in the wet-drawing process.
