2-Hydroxy-3-crotonyloxypropyl methacrylate (HCPM) was prepared by the reaction of glycidyl methacrylate with crotonic acid using tetraethylammonium iodide as catalyst. It was polymerized and copolymerized with maleic anhydride (MAH) by AIBN. Homopolymers (PHCPM) prepared in a solution of less than 20% monomer concentration and even to high conversions were soluble in most organic solvents. The soluble PHCPM contained about 95% trans-crotonate double bond. Cyclization in the polymers was not indicated by IR or NMR spectra. In HCPM (M<SUB>1</SUB>) -MAH (M<SUB>2</SUB>) copolymerization, the monomer reactivity ratios, <I>r</I><SUB>1</SUB> and <I>r</I><SUB>2</SUB>, were evaluated to be 4.13 and 0.04, respectively by the Fineman-Ross method. The PHCPM and HCPM-MAH copolymers were crosslinkable by UV irradiation.
