The effect of temperature on the amination of chloromethylated polystyrene (CMPS) was investigated in various solvents. It seemed reasonable to consider that the quarternization of CMPS with triethylamine (TEA) is a nucleophilic displacement reaction and the rate is dependent upon the concentrations of both the free amine and chloromethyl group. The reaction rates increased with increasing the cohesive energy density (CED) and <I>E</I>T values of the solvents. In a protic solvent, a large activation energy was obtained owing to the hydrogen-bonding of TEA with the solvent. On the other hand, in the case of aprotic solvents, the activated complex was strongly solvated and the amination was remarkably affected by the entropy of activation. The correlations beween the CED value of the solvent vs. the activation energy and entropy of activation have a peak point in the range of 130 to 150cal/m<I>l</I>. This may be explained by the compensation effect between the activation energy and the entropy of activation.
