The copolymerization of N-(4-substituted phenyl) maleimide (M<SUB>2</SUB>) with vinyl acetate (M<SUB>1</SUB>) by radical initiator was carried out, and the effects of substituents of N-(4-substituted phenyl) maleimides on the copolymerization reaction were investigated. While, as for the relative reactivities (1/<I>r<SUB>1</SUB></I>) of N-(4-substituted phenyl) maleimides toward vinyl acetate radical, no reasonable order was obtained through the all substituents, the 1/<I>r<SUB>2</SUB></I> decreased in the following order of the substituents COCH<SUB>3</SUB>>COOC<SUB>2</SUB>H<SUB>5</SUB>>OCOCH<SUB>8</SUB>>Cl>H>CH<SUB>3</SUB>>OCH<SUB>3</SUB>.<BR>The order can mostly be explained in term of polar effect and difference in homopolymerization reactivity.<BR>Linear relationships between Hammett's σ values and the 1/<I>r<SUB>2</SUB></I> values, and also between σ and the <I>e<SUB>2</SUB></I> values werefound, and these results were discussed.
