The copolymerization of methyl N-carbamyl-maleamate with styrene was carried out in acetone at 70°C. The monomer reactivity ratios were found to be about 0.9 (γ<SUB>s</SUB>) and 0 (γ<SUB>m</SUB>).<BR>Alkaline hydrolysis of the copolymer was carried out in dioxane-methanol at 60°C. Methyl N-carbamyl-maleamate unit was readily hydrolyzed to produce maleamic acid unit, but hydrolysis of maleamic acid unit was very difficult. Maleamic acid unit could be readily converted to maleimide unit. Therefore, the copolymer of maleimide with styrene could be prepared from the copolymer of methyl N-carbamyl-maleamate with styrene.
