Polyvinylacetates, prepared by the solution polymerization in butyraldehyde, are low polymers. The degrees of polymerization of these low polymers are 10-20. Kinetic behaviors of the saponification reaction of the low polymers are similar to that of ordinary high polymers. These low polymers and the saponification products, polyvinylalcohol, have one carbonyl group per one polymer molecule. The carbonyl groups of this polyvinylalcohol can be determined by hydroxylamine hydrochloride method, bisulfite method and silver oxide method. Therefore, the carbonyl groups are aldehyde groups.
