Employing the mass-spectrometer we have examined the thermal decomposition of PVA in vacuum and oxgen. Heating is so controlled that the temperature is kept constant for a sufficiently long time, and raised step by step. The reaction of each step is the first order reaction and the saturated value a is the function of temperature T and its raising interval ΔT. Results are attributed to the existence of a distribution function f (T) of the source of generated vapour in PVA, and the approximate shape of f (T) is obtained experimentally. In addition, the difference between the merely dehydrated and the chemically decomposed water is observed by means of the heavy water exchange. Results give some suggestions to the decomposition mechanism of PVA.
