The viscosity of the partially (0-40mol%) cyanoethylated polyvinyl alcohol (PVCE) in dilute aqueous solution was studied. The intrinsic viscosities [η] and Huggins'constants k decrease and increase respectively with the elevation of temperature (5-60°C). As to the effect of the extent of cyanoethylation, the maximum [η] and minimum <I>k</I>′ were found at the 20-25 mol%PVCE corresponding to the most extensible molecular form. It may be principally due to a competitive effect of the thermodynamical interactions between each pairs in the two structural units of the copolymer and solvent, although some effect of the decreasing of the molecular flexibility by the cyanoethyl group may have been considered. The η<I><SUB>sp</SUB>-C</I> or in η<I><SUB>sp</SUB>-C</I> plot of the highly cyanothylated PVCE near the water-soluble limit shows the poor solvent characteristics, especially at the higher temperature. The precipitation temperature of the PVCE over 25mol%lowering below 100°Cwith the increase of the extent of cyanoethylation, and the moisture content of PVCE film at RH 65% showing the maximum value at the about 20mol% PVCE, are the interesting results corresponding to the viscometric behaviors.
