The cocoon drying technique using microwave was expected to improve the drying process. Thus, fresh cocoons were irradiated with microwave at 0.75 to 1.5kW (2, 450±30MHz) at 50 to 100°C. It took 45 to 80min to obtain the drying rate of about 42%. The speed of cocoon drying was increased rapidly until the drying rate of about 87% was attained and decreased slowly thereafter. Irradiation with higher capacity of microwave caused pupal breeding which stained the inside of cocoons. As a whole, the irradiation with microwave was found to shorten the cocoon cooking time with the increased reelability, but decreased the weight of cocoon filament and the rate of raw silk. The neatness defects and major defects were not affected by the irradiation.
