Haemagglutination activity of the larval haemolymph of the silkworm, Bombyx mori was investigated in relation to the growth and development in the larval-pupal period.Topical application of a juvenile hormone analogue (JHA), methoprene (5μg/larva), to two days old fifth instar larvae delayed the spinning for one day, although untreated larvae were able to spin on day 9. The haemagglutination activity of the haemolymph was compared between the untreated larvae and JHA-treated ones. The appearance of the maximum haemagglutination activity in the JHA-treated larvae was delayed by one day, compared with that in the untreated larvae. Among the 130K-glycoproteins (lectins) related to the haemagglutination activity, the inactive form contained a significant amount of sialic acid, whereas the active form contained only a small amount of sialic acid. The disappearance of sialic acid from the 130K-glycoprotein was delayed by one day by the application of JHA. The results of sialic acid analysis suggest that the lectin activity is regulated by terminal sialic acid in the sugar chains of the lectin-protein.
