As a first step of study on the metabolism of cyclic nucleotides in the silkworm, Bombyx mori, we have examined whether any calcium binding protein is present in the silkworm, and have succeded in the purification of a calmodulin-like protein from larval heads of the silkworm. The preparation was pure as judged by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis under denaturing conditions (SDS-PAGE). The molecular weight of the calmodlin-like protein was similar to that of bovine calmodulin as they co-migrated during SDS-PAGE. The Bombyx calmodulin-like protein showed a characteristic mobility change on non-denaturing gels: The mobility was decreased in the presence of Ca2+ and increased in the absence of Ca2+.
