Germination of mulberry seeds was accelerated by a short-term irradiation of red light. Far-red light irradiated after red one nullfied the action of red light, but it could be recovered by further red light. Thus, the action of red and far-red was reversible, and germination depended on the last treatment of the sequence of red and far-red light irradiations. Therefore, it is evident that germination of mulberry seeds is controlled by the phytochrome system.Germination was also stimulated by prechilling treatment. This stimulatory effect was observed irrespective of levels of Pfr present in the seeds, suggesting that the action of prechilling for stimulation of germination is independent of the phytochrome system.
