(1) When comparing the characteristics of M. cathayana from Java with those described by JANAKI AMMAL, FORBES·HEMSLEY, SARGENT or KOIDZUMI, it is apparent that most of the former are akin to those of the latter, but a few characteristics, such as the hirsute character of perigonium lobes, leaves, petioles and young shoots, the yellowish color of perigonium lobes of male flowers and the long cylindrical character of catkins of the latter are found to be different from those of the former.(2) M. cathayana from Java used in this experiment was diploid, with a chromosome number of 2n=28 (2x). The chromosome sizes ranged from the two longest ones being about 1.7μm in length to the medium ones measured at about 1.1μm and the shortest one was about 0.7μm long during the mitotic metaphase. Regarding the shape of them, many chromosomes were metacentric and some ones submetacentric, but the smaller chromosomes were difficult to determine their size due to their small size.(3) While considering the above mentioned data it is noticeable that the morphological characteristics of M. cathayana from Java are of the diploid plants and those of the plants from Hupeh and Szechuan may be of the polyploid plants.(4) We came to an assumption that the hirsute character of leaves, perigonium lobes, petioles and young shoots, the yellowish color of the perigonium lobes of the male flowers and the long cylindrical catkins of the plants from Hupeh and Szechuan are due to the gigantism of the polyploid plants.
