The trehalose levels in the hemolymph of silkworms are shown to change according to the developmental stages, especially metamorphosis. To see the changing mechanisms, utilization rates and turn-over rates of trehalose were measured by using 14C-trehalose as a tracer during larval-pupal-adult development. Utilization rates were maintained at a high level through 5th instar but markedly decreased during larval-pupal ecdysis. While as adult development proceeds, the rates rose again to the comparable levels with those found in larval stages. Such a changing profile of utilization rates closely resembled that of trehalose contents, which suggests that utilization process is not a predominant step for controlling trehalose contents in silkworms.Then, the turn-over rates of trehalose were estimated from its half life and their changing profiles were compared with those of trehalose contents during larval-pupal-adult development. There was a mutual resemblance between them. Accordingly, synthetic activity is conceived to be rather important for regulation of trehalose levels in hemolymph of silkworms.
