In the spring rearing of 1964, retarded molting (rm) mutant larvae were found in a lethal lemon larval (leml) strain, YD4. The experimental results suggested that the recessive rm gene was produced by spontaneous mutation at the proximal end of the 3rd chromosome where the lem+gene is located (Fig. 1).Larvae homzygous for the rm gene were smaller than normal YD4 larvae with lemlrm+/lem+rm, and their growth was remarkably retarded. They had a low viability indicating an incomplete lethal action of the rm gene.Experiments on the linkage relationships of the rm gene with two markers in the 3rd linkage group, lem and Ze, gave recombination values, 6.5% between lem and re and 14.1% between rm and Ze. Accordingly, the gene arrangement in the proximal region of the 3rd linkage group is as follows; lem(0.0)-rm(6.5)-l-m(10.8)-Ze(20.8).The expressivity of the rm gene was almost complete in homozygons rm larvae of strain YD4, but it tended to be lower in the hybrids of YD4 with other strains. As to genetic and environmental conditions to lower the xpressivity, further studies are required.
