In order to confirm the effectiveness of Manta, a drug with juvenile hormone activity, for the silkworm rearing, we conducted practical administrative tests for the silkworms reared on mulberry leaves in spring, summer and autumn rearing seasons. The results were as follows:1. Administration of the standard Manta solution (diluted 500 times) during the 48th to 60th hour of the 5th instar, resulted in the increase of the cocoon shell weight by 6 to 10 percent throughout the three rearing seasons.2. Administration of a large amount of standard Manta solution did not cause any problem in the development of the silkworm as revealed by non-spinning and poor cocoon quality.3. Highest increase of cocoon production was obtained when 5th-instar larvae 72 hours after ecdysis were treated with the Manta solution.4. Administration of higher doses of Manta solution (diluted 5-500 times) in autumn reaing season resulted in much higher cocoon quality both in cocoon shell weights (10-18% increase) and pupal weights.5. Future problems for the improvement of the administrative technique were discussed.
