The collapsing egg produced in Grcol homozygous female is characterized by abnormal shell structure which collapses within a short period after deposition. The authors made a study on the shell structure of these eggs as the first step to the elucidation of the mechanism of abnormal chorion formation in the strain. Mature collapsing eggs were taken out from oviducts of female moth homozygous for Grcol and the egg shell was observed externally under a differential interference contrast microscope and histologically by MALLORY'S triple staining. Each egg was observed in the following five regions, the perimicropylar, the lateral, the dorsal, the ventral and the posterior region. Eggs taken out of heterozygous-Grcol moths served as control (normal).On the surface of collapsing eggs there were many slight ridges of chorion. These were the same findings as seen on the surface of the developing middle layer of normal eggs. Many small empty cavities were observed in the shell of collapsing egg and these were abundant in the posterior region. Respiratory canals were irregularly curved and longer in collapsing eggs than in normal eggs and the length was remarkably greater in ventral region than in the others.Histological pictures show that the chorion of a collapsing egg consisted of 3 layers, A, B and C. The inner most layer, A, dyed red, and the thickness and stainability of it were the same as in the inner layer of normal eggs. The intermediate layer, B, was thinner in thickness than the middle layer of normal eggs and dyed pale red as seen in the early stage of middle layer formation in normal eggs. The outermost layer, C, was very thin in thickness, dark red in staining, and remarkably different in structure and stainability from the outer layer of normal eggs.From these findings, chorion formation in Grcol homozygous female of this mutant strain is considered to cease in the early stage of middle layer formation. The regional difference in abnormality of shell structure suggests that the abnormal function of follicular epithilium controlled by Grcol gene is manifested in different way according to the position of shell on the surface of the collapsing egg.
