Abscisic acid (ABA) is implicated in the regulation of leaf abscission, senescence, growth inhibition and bud and seed dormancy. This paper describes the effect of ABA on germination of mulberry seeds. The germination tests were conducted by sowing 50 seeds on a filter paper moistened with 5ml of distilled water or test solution, which was placed in a 6cm Petri-dish, kept at about 28°C under continuous fluorescent illumination. The results obtained are summarized as follows.1. ABA inhibited germination of mulberry seeds and this effect ranged from slight retardation in the onset of germination at the lowest concentration (0.1ppm) to complete inhibition throughout the 19-day test period at the highest concentration (2.0ppm).2. Seed germinability was not destroyed even by the highest ABA concentration applied, and normal development and growth were resumed when the seeds were transferred from ABA solution to water.3. Desiccated seeds which had been treated with 2.0ppm ABA solution for 60 hours were placed again on germination blotters. Eight days after the seeds were wetted with water, germination rate reached 99.0%. On the contrary, desiccated seeds which had been kept in the water for 60 hours, lost its viability remarkably.4. Tne results show that the inhibitory effect of ABA on the germination of mulberry seeds is not permanent, but temporary and reversible.
