Potted young mulberry trees having about 30 leaves were divided into two groups. In one group, shoots were pruned, leaving 4 leaves on the basal part of the stem, and in the other, shoots were pruned as above and at the same time, all remaining leaves were removed. The trees, were shaded for 0, 5, 10 or 15 days. Dry matter production in the tree was determined for 45 days after the shoot pruning.Sprouting of axillary buds after pruning was more accelerated in trees with remaining leaves than those with no leaves remaining, but this was somewhat retarded by shading the pruned trees.Dry matter production during 45 days after pruning was markedly increased in the trees with remaining leaves. Shading reduced the dry matter production. The extent of the reduction was greater in the trees with remaining leaves.Photosynthetic rate of the remaining leaves was remarkably enhanced at 8 days after shoot pruning compared with the rates before pruning.These results indicate that leaves remaining after shoot pruning have an influence on the dry matter production, firstly through their photosynthetic activity, and secondly through the acceleration of sprouting of axillary buds, which in turn helps to increase LAR.
