The influence of nickel or polymers on the zeta-potential of serpentine soil clay was studied by ultramicroelectrophoresis, and the effect of various polymer treatments on the serpentine soil was investigated by measuring the amount of nickel extracted from soil. Nickel in soil was extracted with distilled water (pH 5.7), N-ammonium acetate (pH 7.0 or 4.5) and N/5 or N/10 hydrochloric acid, and determined by atomic absorption method. The results obtained were as follows;1) The zeta-potential of serpentine soil clay decreased with increasing nickel concentration, when the weakly acidic aqueous solution of nickel (pH 5.7) was added to the clay suspension adjusted to pH 7.0. In this case nickel was almost completely divalent. However, when the nickel solution adjusted to pH 7.0 was added, only a part of nickel in solution was divalent and in the case of nickel solution adjusted to pH>8.1, the nickel was almost completely changed to hydroxide.2) The negative zeta-potential of serpentine soil clay, obtained by adding sodium polyacrylate or sericin A, increased with the increase in pH of clay suspension. This phenomenon can be explained by the adsorption of polymers on soil clay. The neutralization of negative zeta-potential of clay particles by nickel was strongly retarded by the polymer treatment.3) The amount of nickel extracted from serpentine soil ranged widely from about 4ppm of water soluble nickel to about 72ppm of N/5 hydrochloric acid soluble nickel. The concentration of extracted nickel was in the following sequence: water soluble <N-ammonium acetate of pH 7.0<N-ammonium acetate of pH 4.5<N/10 hydrochloric acid<N/5 hydrochloric acid. When the soil was treated by 2.0 or 4.0 percent of bentonite-polyvinilalchol or sericin B complexes, the water soluble nickel was suppressed strongly. The same treatment by bentonite showed also the same effect as mentioned above.
