In order to examine the effect of defoliation on the matter production in mulberry trees, dry-matter production before and after the treatment of defoliation was studied removing different amounts of leaves of growing trees on the basis of leaf area, either from the shoot tip downwards or from the shoot base upwards.The results obtained will be summarized as follows.1. After defoliation from the shoot tip downwards, the more the leaves were removed, the more the lateral shoots developed. On the other hand, after defoliation from the shoot base upwards, several lateral shoots developed towards the upper portion of the shoot, irrespective of the amount of defoliation. After removal of all the leaves, many lateral shoots began to develop, but the growth was poor.2. Dry-weight increment was largest in the topped but undefoliated trees and became less as the amount of leaves defoliated was increased. The increment was less in trees defoliated from the shoot tip downwards, than in trees defoliated from the base upwards, although the amount of leaves defoliated was the same in both batches of the trees.3. The dry-matter increase in each organ 40 days after defoliation, expressed as the percentage of the total increase in dry matter, of all the organs combined, was proportionally larger in the case of the new lateral shoots developed, but was less in the case of stump and root portions, as the amount of leaves defoliated increased.4. The total amount of leaves harvested at the begining of the treatment and 40 days later was largest in the topped but underfoliated plants, was a little bit lower in the plants defoliated from the shoot base upwards and was much lower in the plants defoliated from the shoot tip downwards.5. The results suggest that the leaves remaining after partial defoliation may have two possible roles, the production of assimilate through their photosynthetic activity and the acceleration of regeneration of lateral buds.
