When extra larval ecdysis was induced by the feeding of ecdysterone to the 24 hours-old larvae of the 5th instar, frequent occurrences of the constriction in the middle division of silk gland were observed and the ratio of its appearance increased according to the dose of ecdysterone. These results indicate that, under the hormonal environment inducing the abnormal extra larval ecdysis, the gland cells of this particular area would degenerate as like as the procedure of pupation.The swelling and adhesion in the anterior division of silk gland were recognized by the feeding of ecdysterone to the 48 hours-old larvae of the 5th instar; the used larvae were reared at the relatively low temperature during the young larval instar. Usually, many typical non-spinning larvae were induced by the same administration test. In some of them, the initial processes of metamorphosis towards the extra larval ecdysis were observed on the anterior division of silk gland. On the other hand, these typical non-spinning larvae were frequently induced by application of synthesized juvenile hormone onto the larvae of the final period of the 5th instar, and the swelling of this particular area was recognized by the simultaneous administration of ecdysterone and synthesized juvenile hormone to the mature larvae. This swelling phenomenon seems to be the initial histological change towards adhesion abnormality of the silk gland. These results will deduce one conclusion that the swelling and adhesion in the anterior division of silk gland might be resulted from the following phenomena; the hormonal environment leading the larvae to the spinning and pupation might be so disturbed by the juvenile hormone that the extra larval ecdysis of tunica intima in the gland cells of this particular area would be induced.
