Generally the residual stresses of the surface hardened steel are higher than that of the ordinary quenching steel, consequently the surface hardened steel is usually tempered at low temperature for the purpose of stress relief, but the amount of the residual stress is not decreased remarkably by the tempering at low temperature, subsequently the various types of the interrupted quenching methods are applied to the induction surface hardening for the purpose of stress relief.
