An autopsy case of a 5-year-old Thoroughbred racehorse colt with malignant hemangioendothelioma was studied histologically, immunohistochemically and lectin-histochemically. Macroscopically, hematoma-like dark reddish friable nodules with diameters ranging from the size of a bean to a head of a child were found scattered over many organs and tissues such as skeletal muscle, diaphragm, myocardium, spleen and lung. Histological characteristics of these nodules were irregularly proliferation of atypical oval or spindle shaped cells with scanty cytoplasm, having round or oval nuclei with abundant chromatin. Apparent mitosis was frequent. These tumor cells tended to be arranged immature blood channels surrounded by argyrophil fibers in many portions. Histologically, this case was suspected to be poor-differentiated malignant hemangioendothelioma. Immunohistochemically and lectin-histochemically, these tumor cells showed positive reaction against factor VIII related antigen, Ulex europaeus I agglutinin (UEA-I) and vimentin, but, negative to cytokeratin and actin. Of the tumor cells, rather well-differentiated regions stained intensely for factor VIII related antigen, but, stained weakly in poor-differentiated regions against factor VIII related antigen. However, reaction for UEA-I was intensified in both poor or well-differentiated regions. Thus, this case was confirmed to be malignant hemangioendothelioma. Further, in the same manner as for humans, ever in the confirmation and differential diagnosis of malignant hemangioendothelioma, it was suggested that the diagnosis method of immunohistochemical antigen, UEA-I and vimentin could become a valuable method of diagnosis.
