In order to evaluate spermatogenic gonadal function in colts, the relationship between testicular structure and tissue components, weight and size of testes were determined employing the method of the score of Johnsen. With the histological observation characterized by factors, variables were further subjected to principal component analysis. No significant differences were observed on the characteristics of factors (weight and size) of individual and both testes. The score of Johnsen was highly correlated with the number of Sertoli cells and diameter of the seminiferous tubule (P<0.01). The number of Sertoli cells was also highly correlated with the diameter of the seminiferous tubule. The regions of the testes showed difference and relationships between tissue and cellular composition with principal component analysis as affected by factors of tissue samples. These findings suggest that the application of principal component analysis on histological evaluation for testes of colts may be useful and a good tool in the different diagnosis of spermatogenetic function and reproductive efficiency in horses.
