Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolated from mares with metritis and infertility during 1982 to 1990 in Hidaka district of Hokkaido in Japan were serotyped and assayed for their antimicrobial susceptibilities. A total of 176 strains out of 191 isolates were typable into 7 serotypes. The most predominant serotype was type A (45.5%) and type B, G and M followed as dominant serotypes in that order. From the results of determination of the minimum inhibitory concentrations, there was no strain to show a high level acquired resistance against the 29 kinds of the antimicrobial agents examined. On the other hand, the so-called middle level resistant strains against the β-lactams except for imipenem were, however, mostly demonstrated in serotype A and M. The isolation rates of this middle level resistant strains tended to decrease year by year. On the contrary, serotype B which did not show any resistance to any of the drugs was lately isolated in an increasing number. These results suggested that serotype A was the most important serotype for the genital infections of mares, and serotype B was also an important serotype for metritis as well as serotype A at least in this district recently. Furthermore, it was confirmed that every antimicrobial agent shown original susceptibility with P. aeruginosa can be used for the treatment of the metritis caused by the P. aeruginosa infection.
