A Histopathological Observation on the Lung of a Horse with Heaves

A histopathological study was conducted on a horse with so-called heaves. Pathogenesis was investigated with a special attention on the mucous plugs in the bronchioles and alveolar ducts, since the occurrence of these plugs had been regarded as participating in the appearance of dyspnea. As a result, it was considered that mucus might have been secreted from metaplastic goblet cells. Histochemically, the mucus was very viscous. It was also suggested that the disappearance of cilia on the surface of the bronchial epithelium owing to goblet cell metaplasia and degeneration of bronchial and bronchiolar smooth muscles might have been concerned with mucous obstruction in the respiratory tract.
