During a period from 1982 to 1986, bacteriological surveys were carried out on rectal swabs or feces taken from 463 foals with diarrhea to know main causes of diarrhea in foals. In addition, some properties of Escherichia coli originated from horses with diarrhea or metritis were examined to clarify the epidemic meanings of this organism isolated from foals with diarrhea. As a result, some suspected bacteria were predominantly isolated from foals with diarrhea. Of these bacteria, hemolytic E. coli showing clear hemolysis like a β-Streptococcus species was frequently isolated from foals with chronic diarrhea, but rarely from normal foals. Besides, the isolation rate of this organism was twice or over as high as that of other bacteria. It was 5 times as high in May as in any other month. From these facts, it was suggested that hemolytic E. coli might be closely associated epidemiologically with chronic diarrhea in foals occurring during the breeding season, especially in May. Many strains of hemolytic E. coli isolated from foals with diarrhea and mares with metritis were classified into serotype O101. This suggests strongly that hemolytic E. coli might be transmitted from mares to foals. On the other hand, E. coli strains isolated from horses with diarrhea or metritis and normal horses were classified into many serotypes. Of these serotypes, O8, O101 and O147 were predominant. Of the strains tested, many possessed mannose-sensitive or mannose-resistant hemagglutinins, and none pilus antigens (K88, K99 and 987P) or enterotoxins (ST and LT).
