Isolation of Klebsiella pneumoniae, Capsule Type 1, from Mares with Metritis and Infertility in Japan

During a period from 1980 to 1983, a bacteriological survey was performed on cervical swabs taken from mares with metritis and infertility in a racehorse-breeding district of Hokkaido. In this district contagious equine metritis (CEM) was first diagnosed in 1980. Haemophilus equigenitalis (Taylorella equigenitalis) was isolated from 15.5% of all the swabs taken during the 1980 breeding season, but from few of those taken from mares which had exhibited CEM-like clinical signs since 1981. On the contrary, Klebsiella pneumoniae was isolated from 17.8% of 45 samples in 1982 and from 43.9% of 41 samples in 1983. All the isolates of K. pneumoniae were identified as capsule type 1 on the basis of their biochemical and serological characteristics. Therefore, it will be necessary to take any immediate measure effective for preventing the spread of K. pneumoniae, capsule type 1, among mares and stallions in this district. This type, as well as H. equigenitalis, is usually absent in the normal flora of genital organs of mares or stallions. It may be transmitted by a stallion to mares, in which metritis is caused.
