The purpose of this study was to investigate heart rate and blood lactate concentration during and after 4 types of maximal work, which were 200m, 1000m, 1600m and exhaustion running (or running at a constant speed of 700m/min until horses were exhausted). Six male horses of 2 years old were used. Maximal heart rate, that was the highest peak heart rate in the 4 running tests, was observed with exhaustion running for about 5 min. The mean maximal heart rate was 233±7 beats/min, which was about seven times as high as the heart rate at the time of resting. On the other hand, the maximal blood lactate concentration, that was the highest peak value in the 4 running tests, was estimated with 1600m running for about 1-2 min. Its mean value was 24.50±3.35 mmol/l. There was no correlation between the maximal heart rate and the performance of the work test. It was suggested, however, that the maximal blood lactate concentration might correspond to the performance only in 1600m running.
