Halothane concentration, gas tension, and pH value in blood were measured in 11 Thoroughbred horses under halothane anesthesia for 30 minutes. The horses were divided into two groups. One group was premedicated and casted by guaiacol glycerin ether (GGE group). The other group was administered with succinylcholine chloride only (SCC group). Blood samples were collected from arteries and veins of the leg. Blood halothane concentrations was measured directly by gas chromatography. Blood gas tension and pH value were measured by IL meter. The following results were obtained. 1. During the maintenance period, conditions were more stable in the GGE group than in the SCC group, in which the halothane concentration increased. In this period, the arterial halothane concentration was 5.00-5.51 mg/100 ml in the GGE group and 4.45-5.67 mg/100 ml in the SCC group. The venous halothane concentration was about 1 mg/100 ml less than the arterial one.2. The arterial oxygen tension reached a very high level in one horse of the GGE group. In the SCC group it was about 40% of the level in the GGE group.3. Arterial and venous carbon dioxide tension remained constant in the SCC group, but rose a little gradually in the GGE group.4. In both groups blood pH value decreased gradually. After the horses were allowed to inspire room air, it began to increase in 5 minutes.5. While during the horses were lying on their side and breathing spontaneously, no ventilation was enough to prevent repsiratory acidosis from occurring.
