Interval training was carried out on horses to obtain data on speed endurance. Then discussion was made on some problems on the possibility of applying interval training to horses. In the present experiments, two Anglo-Arabian fillies two years old were used. At first as a pre-interval training, continuous running training (2, 200 m run in canter at a speed of 540-660 m/min) was carried out to acquire data on general endurance. Then a workout of interval training was undertaken in the following manner : 3-200 m run in canter (720-780 m/min) with 900 m recovery jogging in trotting (360-420 m/min) after each. Hematological and electrocardiographic measurements were performed three times throughout the experimental period. The following results were obtained. 1) By continuous running training, no improvement was observed in the fitness for performance of both horses. 2) After the interval training, the fitness for performance was proved to be improved from a decrease in body weight, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and eo3inophil count, and a decrease in packed cell volume and hemoglobin in horse No. 1. No improvement, however, was observed in horse No. 2. 3) In order to apply the interval training to horses, some problems were pointed out from the experiments. The training might be applicable only when general endurance was acquired by a horse to some extent. The intensity of exercise and the number of fast phases in a workout might be decided for individual horses according to the conditions of general endurance in these horses. When a workout was composed, it might be useful to measure the heart rate during exercise as an index.
