The expansion of quick lime on the hydration has been observed since acient times. This property has been utilized for various practical uses, but up to now very little detailed research has been done on the expansive stress.<BR>This report examines the influence of burning degree and retarding agent on expansive stress of quick lime. The results are as follows.<BR>1) When using quick lime alone, even if burning degree is high, blown-out shot occurs and expansive stress cannot be obtained.<BR>2) When adding retarding agent such as glycerin and ethanol to quick lime with 4N-HCl con-sumption below 300ml and crystal size larger than 2.5 μm, approximately 100 kgf/cm2 of expansive stress is obtained. In that case, hydration rate of quick lime is within 400cal/hr·g and elapsed time to the maximum rate is longer than 40 min.
