Basic calcium carbonate 2CaCO3·Ca (OH) 2·1.5H2 0 (BCC) has been expected to be used as a pigment for coated paper, since it is composed of plate-like fine crystal in shape. In addition, BCC is a very useful as a starting material to prepare calcium carbonate with controlled particle characterization. However, BCC is less stable in water at a higher temperature for its metastability to convert to Ca (OH) 2 and CaCO3.<BR>The paper deals with the manufacturing condition of BCC powders and its stability with addition of some electrolytes.<BR>The results obtained are summerized as follows;<BR>1) BCC is stable in water up to 20°C for 1 week, but trends to decompose above 30°C in few days. The decomposed products is composed of aragonite crystals with fine particles of calcite and Ca (OH) 2.<BR>2) Among the various kind of additives, such as chloride, sulfate, nitrate and so on, only the sulfate compounds except Al2 (SO4) 3 are effective for the stability of BCC with 0.5 mol% addition.
