It was found out by DSC analysis that the needle form α-hemihydrate is formed isothermally without autoclaving when gypsum is heated at temperatures ranging 110°C to 140°C under P<SUB>H<SUB>2</SUB>O</SUB> 760 mmHg (1 atm).<BR>This formation of α-hemihydrate was concluded by SEM observation to be based on "through solution" mechanism.<BR>There was observed a tendency by DSC analysis that the exothermic peak detected just after the dehydration of 1/2 H<SUB>2</SUB>O increased its height and lowered its peak temperature according to the elongation of crystal along its <I>c</I>-axis.
