The changes in the liquid concentration were determined during the hydration of granulated blast furnace slag in the presence of CaSO4 at 20°C. NaOH or Ca (OH) 2 was added, as alkaline activator. The following conclusion were obtained from the result of experiments with relatively high water to cement ratio.<BR>1. CaSO4 promotes the hydration of slag, since it reacts with CaO and Al2O3 component dissolved from slag and keeps their concentrations low.<BR>2. Alkaline activators promote the dissolution of SiO2 and Al2O3 from slag. And dissolved Al2O3 component is immediately consumed when CaSO4 exists.<BR>3. NaOH promotes the dissolution of CaSO4. The consumption of CaO component in CaSO4 is faster than that of SO3, because of the formation of hydrates with higher content of CaO. SO3 component remaines as Na2SO4 in liquid phase.<BR>4. When Ca (OH) 2 is added too much, hydration products grow thick at the surfaces of slag, and the later reaction is prevented. The rate of slag hydration is highest when pH is about 12.
