It has well known that properties of polycrystalline material such as ceramics are greatly governed by its microstructure. The influence of particle size and activity of powder material on formation of the microstructure have been studiede in the case of sintered II calcium sulfate anhydride.<BR>During mechanical grinding of high crystalline II CaSO4, its crystal lattice was gradually distorted with increasing surface area by shear stress and then the surface property was also activated. The longer grinding time, the larger degree of distortion occurred. It was suggested that when the body molded by use of activated fine powder (size 0.05-0.1μ) as grinding Product was heated, its sintering and crystal growth were much accelerated by rapid diffusion through surface and grain boundary. On the other hand, when the activated fine powder was heated in bulk, its structural distortion was rapidly disappeared without growing crystal grain and it could be changed into inactive fine powder.<BR>The possibility to control the activity of powder material for ceramics was discussed in the case of ground II CaSO4.
