The effects of burning atmospheres on the behaviors of Alite composing mix were studied by microscope, X-ray diffraction and chemical analysis.<BR>The mixtures of raw materials having conpositions of C<SUB>3</SUB>S containing 0-10 wt% of Fe<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> were prepared and burned at 1300-1500°C for 1 hour under several kinds of burning atmospheres.<BR>The results obtained may be concluded as follows : (1) under moderately reducing atmospheres were unstable to dust the clinkers including iron oxide during their cooling and under strongly reducing one they melted, but any burning atmospheres had no effects on resulting clinkers having the composition of pure C<SUB>3</SUB>S to dust. Under reducing atmosphere were promoted β-γ inversion of primary C<SUB>2</SUB>S, this probably being at the bottom of the formation of some amounts of FeO from Fe<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> by the burning atmosphere.<BR>(2) Alite phases in the iron-bearing clinkers seemed to break down under moderately atmosphere, and under strongly reducing atmospheres tended to increase free lime content in the clinkers burned at 1300-1400°C but to decrease when burned at 1450-1500°C. <BR>(3) On the other hand the foollwing results were also observed by chemical and x-ray analysis that the burning atmosphere had no effects on the behavior of clinkers obtained from the raw materials composed of ground pure C<SUB>3</SUB>S previously prepared by several times of burning at high temperature and chemically pured green Ee<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>.
