Experimental investigations have been carried out to obtain reliable relationship for practical purposes existing between Resistance to flow of gases through lime shaft kiln during calcination of limestone ranging from 5 (mm) to 35 (mm) in size and working conditions of the kiln, from a standpoint of determination of main dimensions in the lime shaft kiln. <BR>In this paper, the authors drew attention only to the flow resistance through preheating zone of the kiln. <BR>The results obtained may be summerized as follows : (1) there were some differences in resistance to flow of gases between the kiln at rest and it at work when the kiln was packed with the very same materials, (2) the resistance to flow through the fixed beds was too sensitive to a change in packing conditions so slight as to be unable to control to obtain some definite values, to the best of the author's experiments, (3) on the other hand, the measured values on the kiln at work showed thet a nearly single-valued plot was obtained when the dimensionless Reynolds number, <I>Re=dp·u·ρ/ (με) </I> was platted against the coefficient of resistance, λ, and that the experimentally determined points fell upon a series of straight lines having the same slope which was independent of particle system used, but moved in a direction parallel to the vertical axis when the pressure gradient, <I>Δp/L</I>, was plotted against the linear nominal velocity of flow, u, (5) on the basis of the author's experiments, the resistance to flow of gases through preheating zone of the kiln at work within±40 percent was shown by the following relationΔp/L=7.54×10<SUP>2</SUP>·Re<SUP>-0.758</SUP> (u/ε) <SUP>2</SUP>2dp·gc·ρ.
