A Study on the Noto Gypsum Mine

The Noto gypsum mituated on Suzu city, north-eastern corner of the Noto peninsula, Ishikawa prefecture. The mine is not only the largest gypsum producer in central districts, but also one of the most important mine in all over Japan.<BR>In the present paper, the writer has described results of study on the Noto mine. Results obtained are as follows : <BR>1) Geology is constructed by basalt, andesite, lower tuff, lower mudstone, upper tuff, upper mudstone (divided into the lower Wakayama and the upper Wakayama bed with glauconite bed) in <I>F</I><SUB>2</SUB>…<I>G</I><SUB>2</SUB> miocene age.<BR>2) It is estimated that the deposite should be mineralized in <I>G</I><SUB>2</SUB>…<I>G</I><SUB>3</SUB> miocene age, or H in over attempt.<BR>3) Deposite constructed with some are bodies, which has irregular or mass formed, lain in E-W thrust zone and grew up into the bedding plaine.<BR>4) Ore is composed of alabaster, selenite mainly, and realy anhydrite.<BR>5) Gangue is composed of vein calcite, nety vein quartz, calcite crystal and calcedonic quartz. The former two are representative of foregoing basic mineralization and the later two are of acidic mineralization.<BR>6) Recognized all are bodies are existed in the Wakayama bed and the Awagura upper tuff. The wall rock in somewhere around the are body has claytized.<BR>7) Clay of wall rock is composed of pyrophyllite, talc, deweylite, Mg-chlorite (laughtenbergite), montmorillonite etc.<BR>8) Acompanied mineral is composed of pyrite, calcopyrite, galena and zincblende. Zincblende is yellow or red coloured and spinel typed fine crystal, then include In, Ga very rich.<BR>9) Sulphide minerals are scattered in the outer zone clay of are body but small in quantity of them. Yet, it is not found barite but alunite.<BR>10) Although the Noto mine had been classified into the Kuroko group, it has shown not only some similar problems to the Kuroko typed deposite, but also some differences in micro chemical component or others.<BR>11) Main calcium origin of gypsum on the Noto mine is in calcite estimately. In mineralization process, calcium which has originated from fauna or segregated from mother rock when it has decomposed, is one of others.
