In a retrospective study of 18 knees in 14 rheumatoid patients followed for an average of 7.5 years after synovectomy, the effect of the operation and the clinical course were assessed. Of operated-on patients, 29% had died, total knee replacement arthroplasties had been performed on 44 % of the 18 at an average of 3 years 5 months after synovectomy, and only 11 % of the 18 knees were good clinically.<BR>We believe that the long-term results of synovectomy of rheumatoid knee are not so good and depend on the control of disease activity.
