The selection and correction of footwear in rheumatoid arthritic patients is an important subject in conservative treatment. A survey of foot deformities, mobility function and footwear was performed in 31 patients who had been prescribed special footwear (all female; aged 34 to 82 yrs, average 58.6 yrs; suffering from established RA for 2 to 35 yrs, average 11.6 yrs), and in 43 patients who had not been treated with special footwear (6 males, 37 females; aged 43 to 85 years, average 68.6 yrs; the years of suffering with established RA, 4 to 45 yrs, average 15.7 yrs) at the Jiseikai Kamiitabashi Hospital.<BR>Among the patients with special footwear, 22 were fitted with special orthopaedic shoes, 7 with ready-made cloth shoes plus plastic shoe in serts, and 2 with both types of footwear. A follow-up study revealed that there were satisfactory results in only 40 %, whereas 33% refused to use or seldom used their prescribed wear. The authors concluded that not only the matching of foot deformities and design of shoes but also the lightness of footwear is critical among shoe prescription in RA patients.
