Polyethylene wear of total knee arthroplasty prostheses was arthroscopically evaluated in 8 knees (6 patients) . Arthroscopy was indicated when the patients had chronic effusion and instability confirmed by stress radiography. All knees had unexpectedly widespread and severe polyethylene wear character-ized by delamination. Based on the arthroscopic visualization of the damage to polyethylene, all patients consented to undergo isolated polyethylene liner exchange. After a mean follow-up of 3 years, all knees were stable and symptom free. These results have highlighted the usefulness of arthroscopy in a certain patient population with polyethylene wear diagnosed by careful clinical examination and stress radiography.
