In bone marrow, various kinds of stem cells have been identified as hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) or multipotent adult progenitor cells (MAPC) . We have already used MSCs for bone regeneration because MSCs differentiate into osteoblasts in the presence of osteogenic factors. We have used cultured MSCs derived from human bone marrow to create tissue-engineered bone tissues combined with biocompatible materials and applied to clinical cases such as osteoarthritis and bone tumors. Our laboratory institute has a cell-processing center (CPC) which contains class 1000 clean rooms. In this review, we show some characteristics of MSCs, and some clinical applications of the tissue-engineered bone tissues regulated by quality control and safety evaluation through fabrication processes in the field of regenerative medicine.
